Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system as well as the male reproductive organs. The organs that are included under the domain of urology includes the adrenal glands, kidneys, male reproductive organs, urinary bladder, ureters, and urethra. The reproductive and urinary tracts are closely connected and disorders of one often impact the other. Many of the conditions managed in urology can be categorized under genitourinary disorders. Urology combines the medical management of disease (i.e. urinary tract infection) to the management of surgical conditions ranging from bladder or prostate cancer to kidney stones, congenital abnormalities, traumatic injury to stress incontinence.
Seven Subspecialties
The American Urologic Association (AUA), governing body for the specialty has divided Urology into seven subspecialties.
- Oncology: The surgical treatment of malignant genitourinary diseases such as cancer of the prostate, adrenal glands, bladder, kidneys, and testes.
- Calculi: Medical, endoscopic, extracorporeal, percutaneous, and surgical management of stones of the urinary tract.
- Female Urology: Medical and surgical management of incontinence and pelvic outlet relaxation disorders.
- Infertility: Medical and surgical management of male infertility.
- Pediatrics: Medical and surgical management of urological disease in the pediatric population.
- Transplant: Renal transplantation or kidney transplantation
- Neurourology: The study of how the nervous system affects the urinary system. Neurological diseases and conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and spinal cord injury can disrupt the lower urinary tract and result in conditions such as urinary incontinence and the inability to urinate.
