Stabilizing Upper Extremities During Surgical Procedures

The process of stabilizing patients during surgical procedures is crucial. Being able to properly stabilize and position your patient will directly correlate to the success of that operation. To ensure your patient’s upper body and arms are positioned correctly, surgical arm boards are a necessary addition to your exam table.

By properly positioning a patient’s arm on one of our surgical arm boards, you are reducing the risk of injury. Positioning injuries can take place during surgeries for many reasons. These injuries can include hypotension, hypoxia, direct nerve injury from compression, etc. When positioning patients it’s also important to be aware of patients with existing injuries, since they are higher risk. These patients would include those with peripheral nerve injury, peripheral vascular disease, obesity or diabetes.

Patients experience a higher level of comfort with upper extremity support. With surgical arm boards, the physician can easily adjust the patient’s arm to facilitate access and manipulation during procedures. This keeps the patient safe and allows better access for the physician and medical staff.

The ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) recommend the following for positioning upper extremities:

  • In the supine position, arm should be limited to 90०.
  • Patients with arm positioned using a surgical arm board should be positioned in way to reduce pressure on the ulnar nerve of the humerus.

Surgical arm boards are excellent additions to your exam table in order to prevent patient injury and increase comfort level. If you have any questions, please comment in the box below!

Educating Patients Through Anatomical Models And Charts

Anatomical models and charts can offer great benefits for both medical personnel and patients. With a wide selection of charts and models, you’ll be able to find exactly what you’re looking for to help inform patients through visual concept.

The human body is complex and varied in that its made up of sophisticated organs and functionalities. Because there are so many diseases, injuries, and illnesses that can affect specific areas of the body, physicians try to explain and articulate information to patients as clearly as possible.

We have a large variety of anatomical education charts and anatomy model designs. Within this broad range of anatomical charts includes: brain and head, ear nose and throat, female and male anatomy, immune system, skin anatomy, vascular system, dental anatomical, extremities, general health, joint, muscle, spine and vertebrae, digestive, heart, lung, skeletal and urinary system charts. Within the selection of anatomical models: alternative medicine, veterinary, brain anatomy, dental, digestive, ear nose and throat, exercise and diet education, extremity anatomy, female and male anatomy, head and skull, heart, immune system and cancer, joint, medical art, medical training, muscle, respiratory, skeleton anatomical, skin and dermatology, spine anatomical, torso anatomy, vascular system and urinary models.

Without a medical background, you might not know where the thoracic vertebrae is located. By showing a patient a full spine model that highlights five sections of the spinal cord it will offer more information for simplified patient education. This model can also be used for lessons in a classroom environment where the didactic colors help to immediately differentiate the full spinal cord, even from a distance.

How better to educate your patients with visual anatomy charts and models? With detailed, high-quality charts and models it’s easier to explain specific areas of the body to patients, especially areas of injury or illness. Are you currently using the power of visual communication with your patients? Let us know if you have any questions or comments in the box below! Using Ultrasound Lotion In Therapeutic Ultrasound Treatments

Therapeutic ultrasound treatments generally refer to any type of therapeutic treatment that uses ultrasounds. A therapeutic ultrasound is a technique that consists of stimulating tissue underneath the skin’s surface through sound waves. These ultrasound treatments can include pain management, physical therapy and a variety of other treatments used in rehabilitation centers.

Similar to how ultrasound gel in diagnostic imaging is an essential product, ultrasound lotion for therapeutic ultrasound treatments is just as essential. Polysonic Ultrasound Lotion is available in 1 gallon jugs, dispensers and pump sizes to accommodate your treatment setting. This multi-purpose ultrasound lotion has a rich, moisturizing formula that is recommended for medical ultrasound procedures where lotion is preferred. Compared to ultrasound gel, the ultrasound lotion is often preferred by medical staff and patients in therapeutic ultrasound treatments. This ultrasound lotion is easily absorbed by the skin during massage, manual application and other physical therapy modalities during therapeutic treatments.

At the beginning of a therapeutic ultrasound treatment, ultrasound lotion is applied to the area of the patient’s body that is being treated. The probe from the ultrasound machine will then circulate the ultrasound lotion against the affected area of the patient. Depending on the type of treatment, generally the ultrasound stimulates a patient’s tissue beneath the surface of skin using high frequency sound waves. Therapeutic ultrasounds not only have the possibility to create heating effects, but its also shown to increase tissue relaxation, increase in blood flow to reduce swelling and inflammation and breakdown of scar tissue.

Therapeutic ultrasound treatments can treat a large variety of pain management therapies including muscle strain, muscle tension, chronic pain, and injuries toward tendon, muscle and ligaments. It is important to use the appropriate ultrasound lotion to assist in these types of treatments. If you have any questions or comments regarding this post, please leave your thoughts below!
