How do I care for my lead glasses?
Here are a few basic recommendations for storing and cleaning your radiation safety glasses. After reading this post you will know how to properly store your lead glasses and safely clean your standard, anti-reflective coated lead glass lenses, and fog-free lead glasses.
Storage
Your radiation safety glasses should be stored in a unit that is clean and in “ready to use” condition, away from dust, dirt and other contaminants. For example, the clearly safe acrylic small safety eyeglass holder is ideal for holding radiation safety glasses. For a larger dispenser, the clearly safe acrylic three-in-one safety dispenser can hold approximately 20 glasses along with other safety supplies. This larger unit has a flip-open top to allow easy access while keeping glasses dust-free. These units are a great place to leave radiation safety glasses before and after use.
Cleaning for Standard & Anti-Reflective Coated Lenses:
Here are a few recommendations for cleaning your standard & anti-reflective coated lead glasses:
- Rinse dirt, dust and particles from lenses by running glasses under a stream of tepid water. If you don’t rinse debris from the lens it may result in scratches that cannot be removed.
- Apply a small amount of water-diluted hand or dish soap to lenses and carefully rub over the entire surface.
- Rinse the lenses thoroughly under a stream of water then wipe dry with a dry cloth.
- Always store your lead glasses face-up in the included case to avoid scratches.
Cleaning for Fog Free Lenses:
Here are a few recommendations for cleaning your fog-free lead glasses:
- Always use a microfiber cloth to clean and dry lenses and always rub lenses gently.
- Use a combination of 4 parts alcohol and 1 part water to clean lenses with your microfiber cloth and thoroughly dry.
- After cleaning, the strength of your fog free coating will temporarily weaken. For best results, we recommend cleaning glasses at the end of the day to leave them out in an open, dry area outside the case for several hours/overnight so that the coating can completely dry.
- Do not use ammonia or chlorine as a cleaner, do not rinse or submerge lenses in water.
- Always store your lead glasses face-up in the included case to avoid scratches.
Taking these recommendations into consideration when storing and cleaning lead glasses will help extend use. It’s important for radiologic technologists to follow instructions listed with lead glasses. As always, if you have any questions please let us know in the comment box below!
